Introduction To Recovery Mode And Its Usage

What is Recovery Mode?
What are its usages?
How to enter Recovery Mode on different Samsung devices?

In this article, I am going to answer all these question.

The term Recovery means "returning to a normal state". Recovery Mode is a term used in mobile repairing world. Recovery Mode includes (but is not limited to) going back to factory state, clearing partition cash, and … in Official Recoveries.

Recoveries are divided into 2 parts; Official and Unofficial. Official Recovery is the one developed by the company that produced the smartphone/tablet and it is installed on the device by default. On the other hand, unofficial recovery is an advanced and customized version of recovery developed by people, groups, or other companies. These recoveries have many extraordinary features that you may not even imagine! You can do lots of things using custom recovery some of which are:

     • Flashing official/Stock ROM or parts of it such as official Kernel, official Recovery, Bootloader, Vendor, and… with .zip or .img extension (format)

     • Flashing unofficial/Custom ROM or parts of it such as Custom Kernel, Custom Recovery, and… with .zip or .img extension

     • Partitioning internal or external memory of the device and creating or changing system partitions to F2FS, EXT4 and…

     • Unbricking, upgrading Build Number, upgrading Android version, …

     • Managing partitions such as system partition, EFS, Data, Cash, … (backuping & restoring)

     • Repairing IMEI & serial number and … by EFS Restore backup or EFS Reset partition

     • Resetting different locks such as password lock, pattern, pin, finger print lock and … without erasing user data!

     • Managing system apps (Installing & Uninstalling) by running internal managing environment or using Aroma File Manager.

     • And hundreds of other features.

In the following, I want to show you how to enter Recovery Mode in different models of devices.

How to enter Recovery Mode on 2019 and later devices:

Turn OFF your device and press volume Up + Power buttons at the same time (if your device is equipped with Bixby, press Bixby + volume Up + Power buttons) until the company's logo shows. Then release the buttons and let the device enter Recovery Mode.

A screen like the one below would show which shows your device is in Recovery Mode. (If Official Recovery is installed on your smart phone, you'll see a screen like below. But if Unofficial Recovery is installed, you'll see Custom Recovery environment).

How to enter Recovery Mode on 2018 and earlier devices:

Recovery Mode in Samsung Smartphones;

Press volume Up + Power + Home buttons at the same time (press Bixby button instead of Home button in devices equipped with Bixby) until company logo appears. Then release the buttons and let your Samsung smartphone to enter Recovery Mode.

How to enter Recovery Mode in all devices without pressing any buttons?

     1. Turn ON your Samsung device and connect it to your laptop or Computer using USB cable and enable Debugging in the Settings of your Android device:

Menu → Settings → Developer Options → USB debugging

     2. Download and extract the file below and paste the Fastboot folder in drive C (Windows drive) of your system. (follow the instructions on the pictures)        Download The File From Here

     3. WHILE you are pressing Shift key on the keyboard, Right click on Fastboot folder and select "Open Command Window Here". (in Windows 10 with Build Number 15063 or higher, "Command Window Here" option is removed.
Thus, to get this option back, you need to download the registry file below and transfer it to desktop of your laptop or computer. Then by double clicking on it and clicking on "Yes" and then "OK", you can make "Open Command Window Here" option reappear in Windows 10!)

Download The Registry File From Here

When CMD window opened, release the Shift key:

     4. Type "adb reboot recovery" in the CMD and press Enter. Your device would automatically restart and enter Recovery Mode.

Notice; in case the above command didn't work, and a message like the one below appeared, put a checkmark on it and press "OK". Then, type the command again and press Enter again:

     5. The following screen would show which is the Recovery Mode screen. (you'll see the screen below if the official Recovery is installed. Otherwise you'll see Custom Recovery environment).

How to enter Recovery Mode in all devices using software boxes and dongles and without pressing any hard keys?

This method is used when the touch screen or hard keys do not work!

     1. Turn ON your Samsung device and connect it to your laptop or computer using USB cable and enable Debugging in the Settings of your Android device. If touch screen does not work, connect OGT cable to your smartphone and connect a mouse to the OTG and enable Debugging from:

Menu → Settings → Developer Options → USB debugging

     2. Run your software box or dongle. I used GSM Dongle in here because it's free ;)

Download GSM Android Tool From Here

Notice; other software boxes and dongles function the same way, the button names may differ though. For example, instead of "Reboot" you may see "Reboot to Recovery" in other software boxes.

Good luck!
