hello friends, i have this dell 5558 mobo# LA-B843P and every time i turn it on it's telling me that the AC power adapter wattage and type cannot be determined and that the battery may not charge. I have tried a different original charger but the same thing happens. It doesn't matter if the battery is on the laptop the warning is the same. I have checked the PSID_EC signal on the super I/O pin 99 and it's 2.8v so it's ok i guess. Other than the warning in the beginning and the fact that the battery is not charging the laptop works fine. Can anybody help me?

Thank you very much,

miltis.

Check PSID_EC.. with DSO(oscilloscope).. you need frequency/waveform there not only 3 volts.. for SMC to recognize the adapter...

1. i don't have a DSO!
2. The voltage is 2.8V shouldn't it be 3.2V? Maybe something is pulling it down?

you need to have DSO to be able to check for frequency... Dell laptops chargers.. are very specific for that PSID to be recognize

so if i check and don't get that wave does it mean that the super i/o is the problem?

it could be a problem with the charger.... then you have to try another "Original" charger of the same brand.. get a replacement charger of the same kind and try.. Just make an order online... it's always good to have an extra charger for your own use for future repairs.. I have extra chargers for everything for testing..

2. yes, the problem could be with SMC.. but double-check the components on the PSID line.. to be sure..

My bet is, the charger is the problem.
